12 FPS tweaks you can do yourself. In about 15 minutes.
The easy wins we check first on every PC. No downloads, no registry hacks, nothing risky.
The basics
- Use a performance power planSettings → System → Power: set it to Best performance. On a laptop, play plugged in.
- Turn on Game Mode, turn off background recordingSettings → Gaming: Game Mode on. Captures: background recording off.
- Check your screen's refresh rateSettings → Display → Advanced display. Lots of 144/240 Hz monitors are left at 60 Hz by mistake.
- Cut startup appsTask Manager → Startup apps. Disable everything you don't need running while you play.
- Keep the game drive at least 15% freeA nearly full drive stutters. Uninstall what you don't play.
Free performance you already paid for
- Turn on XMP / EXPO in the BIOSWithout it, most RAM runs far below its rated speed. It's one setting in the BIOS memory menu.
- Install the latest GPU driverStraight from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, not Windows Update.
- Check your temperaturesA hot CPU or GPU slows itself down. Clean the dust filters and make sure the fans spin.
- Use Ethernet, not Wi-FiA cable cuts ping spikes more than any setting.
Lower input delay
- Turn on NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-LagIf your game has Reflex, set it to On + Boost. It lowers input delay a lot.
- Play in fullscreen, not windowedExclusive fullscreen usually gives more FPS and less delay.
- Close overlays you don't useDiscord, Steam, GeForce Experience and recording overlays all cost a little.
Want the deep stuff?
BIOS tuning, timer resolution, background latency, per-game configs: that's what a session is for. Done live on a call while you watch, benchmarked before and after, and every change is reversible.
